Carbon Guard is a high spec insulation blanket material that has been developed for engine exhaust parts. It has been designed to be extremely cost effective through its life time, to maximise performance whilst minimising cost. The blanket is a removable flexible sewn composite that combines the best thermal resistance and longevity at the lowest possible cost.
The primary insulation material is a large diameter, SFB mineral fibre insulation with a very high thermal resistivity. Although fibre glass could also have been used the SFB material has 16 times the thermal resistance so enables a much lower overall thickness. Carbon fibre is also utilised in the design as a thermal radiation barrier, it is also less costly than other barriers such as stainless steel foil. The outer fabric is a silicon coated mineral cloth. The inner surface is an Inconel mesh. At a thickness of 13mm and a temperature of 550°C the average coefficient of thermal conductivity K<0.5..
All the components of the blanket are safe when used in high temperature insulation blankets. Our blankets do not contain, ceramic, glass or rock wool fibres which have been linked to pulmonary diseases when they degrade after repeated cycles of wetting and heating.
The blanket materials and construction have been designed to last a minimum of 12000 operating hours with the probability of 20000 hours. This is based on the operating history of similarly designed blankets. The definition of Longevity in this context is having retained virtually all its insulation value along with being physically intact and in place in an application. Other types of insulation have been shown to degrade substantially with time and the elements.
The flexible design of the Carbon Guard blanket allows it to be installed very easily. The use of stainless steel springs and clips enable a custom fit to be easy to achieve. The blanket has a 4 sided design, which allows the installer to encase the exhaust system in sections while gradually working along its length. This also enables the insulation to be removed if new exhaust parts require to be fitted or for other maintenance work..
The insulation materials used in this product have been selected to be resistant to automotive fluids, temperature, physical abuse, moisture and road chemicals. Although other less costly materials are available they have much poorer environmental resistance.
